Time flies… The clock is ticking… never stops, never slows down. Time vanishes right in front of us.

…and the most incredible thing:  time is what we have the least and yet it is the most important thing we can ever possess.  Time. All we need is time… Time is what life is made up of… Time to enjoy family, time to create new things, time to explore and travel the world, time to contemplate the miracle of life, time to find peace in nature… time.. All we need is time.

…and the irony is that the only thing for sure, for sure REALLY that we have less and less.. That thing is time… Every day we have less of it.  Every day less, not more… we have less time, everyday, 24 hours less, every hour 60 minutes less and time vanishes like that. Whether we enjoyed or not, whether we seized the opportunities or not, whether we got stuck in our nostalgia or anxiety or not.

The saying goes that “Time flies. It’s up to you to be the navigator”. (Robert Orben). However even if you are in control of your life, even if you use your time super wisely EVERY DAY, even if you NEVER waste a single opportunity to enjoy your time.. even then, your time will be UP some decades from today. Depending on how old you are, it may be 2,3 or 4 decades later, but your time will be up as well.

How to cope with that? The world suggest building a legacy, something to leave for future generations. In a sense, a well raised and united family is just that. However, even if we do that, even if we accomplish things like Steve Jobs or Martin Luther King did, that still leaves us with that astonishing question: where does this all go? A guy with a brilliant mind like Steven Jobs.. where did that all intelligence go? What about Dr King with all his eloquence and passion for justice? Did that all end with the flesh? We, humans, were born to doubt, to fight death as a final reality. (Ecl 3:11)

The wonder of life with all its randomness and pain may be illustrated by the sense of smell. Scents evoke powerful memories. The scent of your loved one or of that special meal your mom used to cook for you. This all brings good memories. it helps us travel back in time. However powerful as the memory is, the scent is gone now, it live ONLY in your memory. You possessed that scent physically for just a few moments, enough for you to register that scent along with a good memory.

Similarly the Bible uses WIND to symbolize God’s spirit. Jesus to Nicodemus in John 3:8 about the nature of the Spirit:

The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.

We can’t control the Wind, we can’t freeze it in time. We can only sense it, we can only experience it. That cool and pleasant afternoon breeze at the sea shore.. that’s not yours to take, it is yours to enjoy it.. for a moment.

Life is just like smelling a good scent, a good perfume. That moment is yours temporarily, than it vanishes in the air.. and it only lives in your memory.. and in God’s heart!!

Yet, in Jesus, we are invited to step into eternal life TODAY. Crazy thought! How to live today, with the awareness that this life is just a tiny glimpse of our existence? How to live today, knowing that death is nothing but a “small” interruption in our fellowship with God. How to face the dangers of life knowing that one day God will make everything new?

Só the words of Jesus come to mind. When He encouraged her to believe her brother will come back to live on that day.

25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

So can we be crazy enough to believe that one day, God will live among us AGAIN? Would we be crazy enough to take Rev 21:3-4 at face value? Do we have enough imagination to believe that one day “God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them.”.

On that day, if you have faith to believe, God will no longer be like the WIND, untouchable, unattainable.. God will be physically present with us and with that, all our memories will be given back to us.

and time will be no more.. not at least that way we understand it.. like a monster eating our lives second by second…

On that day, we will live with God forever and with all the ones who also love God.

Do you believe in that? If so the question is: How shall we live TODAY as we wait for that?
